Titanium Dioxide (E171) — Evidence-Based Food Profile | Designed Nutraceuticals
Titanium Dioxide (E171)
White pigment used in candy coatings, chewing gum, and some medications. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded in 2021 that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe as a food additive -- nanoparticles accumulate in the gut, liver, spleen, and kidneys, and may be genotoxic. Banned as a food additive in the EU since 2022.

Cautions & Interactions
BANNED as food additive in the EU since 2022. EFSA concluded it cannot be considered safe -- nanoparticles are potentially genotoxic and accumulate in organs. Disrupts gut microbiome and promotes intestinal inflammation. Drug conflict: nanoparticles may alter absorption of co-administered medications. Avoid entirely -- choose products without E171.

Sodium Nitrate / Nitrite (E249-E252)
Preservatives used in processed meats (bacon, hot dogs, deli meats, cured sausages). Nitrites react with amines in meat under high heat to form nitrosamines -- potent carcinogens. The IARC classifies processed meats as Group 1 carcinogens, with nitrosamines as the primary mechanism. Also linked to methemoglobinemia in infants.
Sodium Benzoate (E211)
Antimicrobial preservative used in soft drinks, fruit juices, pickles, and condiments. The Southampton randomized trial (McCann et al., Lancet 2007) found increased hyperactive behavior in children after exposure to mixtures containing artificial colors and sodium benzoate. However, the trial used a mixture, so it cannot establish that sodium benzoate itself caused the effect -- the behavioral signal cannot be isolated to benzoate alone. Other research has not consistently demonstrated adverse reactions. A major review notes potential toxicological concerns but states that the relevance of many findings to actual human exposure remains uncertain. Classification: potential concern, but human evidence does not isolate sodium benzoate sufficiently to establish causation. Separately, in the presence of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), sodium benzoate converts to benzene -- a known human carcinogen (IARC Group 1).
BHA / BHT (E320 / E321)
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are synthetic antioxidant preservatives used in cereals, chips, vegetable oils, and packaging. BHA is listed as a possible human carcinogen (IARC Group 2B). Both are endocrine disruptors at high doses and may interfere with thyroid hormone signaling.
Sulfiting Agents / Sulfur Dioxide (E220-E228)
Class of preservatives including sulfur dioxide, sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, potassium bisulfite, and potassium metabisulfite -- used in wine, dried fruits, shrimp, processed meats, and packaged foods. Controlled challenge studies have demonstrated that sulfite exposure provokes bronchospasm and asthma attacks in susceptible individuals. FDA itself recognizes adverse reactions including asthma and mandates label declaration when sulfites are present at >=10 ppm. One controlled study of sulfite-treated lettuce produced severe reactions in two of five sulfite-sensitive asthmatic subjects, including one life-threatening reaction. Clinical significance is HIGH in susceptible individuals. Also depletes thiamine (vitamin B1) and can trigger anaphylaxis in severe cases.
